9. How People Become Part of Government

Workbook Page 34
People can become part of government 3 ways. They can be
  • Elected
  • Appointed
  • Hired
So far, we have only talked about elected members of government.

A person can be elected to government by voters in an election. Or a person can be elected to be the leader by members of their political party.

Alison Redford was elected to be an MLA by voters in her riding. She was elected to be the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta by members of the party. When the party won the election, Alison Redford became the Premier of Alberta.

A person can be appointed by elected leaders to a position in government. Some appointments are volunteer jobs, like being on a PDD board. Other appointments are paid jobs, like Trade Representative to Asia for Alberta.

Disability Advocate

A person can be hired by elected people or by other government staff. They are sometimes called "bureaucrats" or government workers. The Disability Advocate, Client Service Coordinators and AISH workers were all hired to be part of government.
